Thibodeau not ready to rest players with playoff spot clinched

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 23:02:00 GMT

With a postseason spot clinched — just the second time in 10 years for the Knicks — coach Tom Thibodeau said he won’t consider resting his players until they’re locked into a seed.“For us, we’re in but there’s still some things at stake,” the coach said. “If someone’s nicked up, they’re not going to play. But we need to keep playing. We want to be playing our best going in. We’re young, we still have a  lot of improvement. But we’re not there yet. So if everything is locked up, maybe we would consider that. But there’s things that are still to be done.”The Knicks (46-33), winners of four straight, can secure at least the fifth seed with a Nets loss Tuesday against the Timberwolves and a victory Wednesday at Indiana.Since Julius Randle is already ruled out for the remainder of the season, the obvious player to rest is Jalen Brunson, who has recently missed games with a sore foot and spraine...

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 23:02:00 GMT

The Chicago Bulls followed a simple formula to complete a 44-point swing and clinch a 128-107 win over the second-best team in the Western Conference: Don’t slow down. After trailing the Memphis Grizzlies by 23 points Sunday, the Bulls seemed set to accept a home beatdown in one of their toughest remaining matchups. But instead of rolling over, the Bulls adopted a frantic style of hands-on defense in the second half, swatting and swiping at every ball within arm’s reach. The pace was spastic, nearly out of control, but it kept the Grizzlies from ever feeling comfortable. The Bulls forced 16 turnovers in the second half, including three consecutive plays in one 31-second stretch of the fourth quarter.Even the video-board operators couldn’t keep up with the pace of play. As the screen showed a replay of a steal for an open-court layup by DeMar DeRozan, Alex Caruso snagged the ball for yet another transition basket, leaving fans to crane their necks to catch the action ...

Through all the weirdness and stoppages that Sunday’s 128-102 home win over the Detroit Pistons brought, the Orlando Magic’s hopes of qualifying for the play-in tournament are still intact.Barely.The Magic’s victory, their sixth win in eight games, brought them to 34-44 on the season — a 12-win improvement over last year’s record with four more regular-season games to play. But results from other Sunday matchups made every Magic game for the rest of the regular season must-wins to keep their play-in hopes alive.First: the Toronto Raptors (39-39) beat the Charlotte Hornets 128-108 to ensure the Magic couldn’t finish the season higher than No. 9 in the Eastern Conference standings.Second: the Chicago Bulls (38-40) came back from a 15-point halftime deficit to beat the Memphis Grizzlies 128-107.The Magic remain four games behind Chicago for the No. 10 seed in the East, but Orlando’s “magic” number is now one, meaning the Magic would ...
