Montgomery Co. forces the removal of a little library that resembles a speed camera

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 09:04:17 GMT

Little libraries — through which people can share books in their neighborhood — are a common sight in the D.C. region, but one that was set up in Kensington, Maryland, had drivers hitting their brakes. This little library on McComas Avenue in Kensington didn’t look like a little wooden birdhouse, but instead a Montgomery County speed camera.“I got a kick out of it,” said Matthew Fairbank, who found the mysterious library along the road outside of his home last weekend.Once he saw it, Fairbank said he ended up sitting on his porch and watching as cars would slow down on the road — which has had a long history of vehicles, many driven by nonresidents, speeding through the neighborhood as a cut-through between Connecticut and Georgia avenues.“That’s actually the first time — I’ve been living here now three years — the first time I’ve seen people slow down in front of my house,” Fairbank said.Tuesday morning, after media reports about the library went out, the county’s ...

ROME (AP) — Prosecutors in Turin have reportedly opened an investigation after the lead singer of British band Placebo insulted Premier Giorgia Meloni during a July 11 concert, calling her a fascist and racist. The LaPresse and ANSA news agencies said the investigation into alleged “vilification” stemmed from a report by carabinieri police about the comments by Brian Molko during a performance at the Sonic Park Festival in Stupinigi, near Turin. LaPresse reported that as of Monday, Molko hadn’t been placed under investigation.According to a cellphone video circulating on social media, Moko said in Italian: “Giorgia Meloni: piece of (expletive); fascist, racist (expletive).”Emails and calls to Turin prosecutors seeking confirmation weren’t immediately returned. Facebook and Instagram messages left on Placebo’s official accounts went unanswered Wednesday.Members of Meloni’s far-right Brothers of Italy party, which has its roots in Italy’s neo-fascist movement, denounced the...

DENVER (KDVR) — New signage could be coming to your local gas station and convenience stores, and it would be posted near the cigarette counter. While the U.S. has made great progress in reducing smoking, 11.5% of adults, or 28.3 million, still smoke cigarettes. So why now? This all stems back from a lawsuit filed by the Clinton administration back in 1999.The initial result was a 2006 federal court ruling that said the major cigarette companies had violated federal anti-racketeering laws by what the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids calls “decades of deception and lies about the hazards of their products.” Thornton mayor granted permanent protection order Under this court order, tobacco companies were ordered to post signs highlighting the deadly consequences of smoking at 220,000 retail stores across the U.S.However, FOX31 was told the tobacco companies put all their resources into appeals.
