Cambridge-based firm to manage startup incubator space for University of Chicago’s planned Hyde Park Labs

CHICAGO — The University of Chicago signed a partnership agreement with Cambridge Innovation Center, a Massachusetts-based operator of shared workspaces and labs, to incubate dozens of faculty-led startup companies within the university’s leased space in Hyde Park Labs, a flagship science building under construction at the corner of 52nd Street and Harper Avenue.Although life sciences researchers at the Chicago area’s many universities often develop new therapies and drugs, the region’s lack of lab space often forced many to take their discoveries, and the jobs eventually created, to research hubs in cities like Boston or San Diego, said CIC founder and CEO Tim Rowe. But the university’s new lab space, and the opportunity to share ideas with like-minded scientists, should help change that.“Hopefully, when they see the tools are here, more of these startup companies will stay in Chicago and more will be formed here in the first place,” he said. The 14-story building, developed by Tram...How Marcus Smart’s trade from Celtics to Grizzlies was in works long before deal was made

The shocking trade that sent Marcus Smart from the Celtics to the Grizzlies seemed like it came together in an instant. But in reality, it was a long time in the making. The deal, of course, nearly didn’t happen on June 28, when the Celtics’ initial deal to acquire Kristaps Porzingis that included Malcolm Brogdon, not Smart, broke down. About 90 minutes later, the Celtics pivoted to trade Smart to the Grizzlies. It didn’t just develop spontaneously, though. The Grizzlies have long admired Smart and had expressed their interest in him long before that night last month. As the Grizzlies introduced Smart in Las Vegas on Friday, Memphis general manager Zach Kleiman explained how their acquisition for Smart came together. They targeted the point guard as a potential addition this summer, even if it didn’t seem likely.“When we started putting names on the board, there was no one higher than Marcus,” Kleiman told reporters in Vegas. “This was early on, it was like, ‘Hey, this is the pie in t...Ticker: Stock market today: Wall Street drifts after jobs report comes in warm but hopefully not too hot

NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street drifted to a mixed close after data suggested the U.S. job market is still warm enough to keep the economy growing but maybe not so hot that it stokes inflation much higher. The S&P 500 fell 0.3% Friday, though slightly more stocks in the index rose than fell. The Dow fell 187 points, or 0.6%, and the Nasdaq slipped 0.1%. A lot is riding on whether the economy can navigate the narrow pathway to avoid a long-predicted recession. Friday’s report showed that employers added fewer jobs in June than in May, not far off economists’ expectations. SAN DIEGO -- Construction on the first of eight microgrids aimed at strengthening energy independence across San Diego was launched by city officials on Friday.Microgrids, which are localized, self-sufficient energy systems, will be placed at eight sites throughout the city in the coming weeks, generating power for facilities like police stations, community centers and fire stations. The $5 million project is part of San Diego's Climate Action Plan, a massive energy infrastructure undertaking spearheaded by Mayor Todd Gloria that aims to achieve net-zero emissions in the city by 2035. Encinitas residents frustrated over limited parking When the project is complete, officials say it will become one of the largest microgrid deployments in California, increasing the city's renewable energy generation portfolio by one megawatt."Too often climate action is framed as sacrifice -- that we will need to give things up to have a healthy, livable planet," San Diego City Council President Sea...Condemned building used by homeless people falls in Brazil, killing 14 people

An apartment building condemned for more than decade but used by homeless people collapsed in Brazil’s northeastern state of Pernambuco, killing 14 people, including six children, firefighters reported Saturday. The building in Recife’s Paulista suburb crumbled in the early hours of Friday, prompting a frantic search for victims.Searchers combed through the rubble with the help of sniffer dogs and rescued two 15-year-old girls and a 65-year-old woman alive, firefighters said. She began her career as a nurse initially in Detroit in the 1950s where she became involved with the civil rights movement before returning to Toronto to continue her activism in the 1960s. In 1985, Salmon became Toronto’s first Black female city councillor, representing North York until her retirement in 1997. NEWARK, N.J. WIMBLEDON, England (AP) — Let other players downplay their championship chances at Wimbledon. Let other players profess — feign? — humility. Let other players express caution in Week 1 that it’s still way too early to be talking about the possibility of reaching the final at the end of the fortnight.Carlos Alcaraz is not interested in any of that. He is No. 1 in the ATP rankings and No. 1 in the seedings at the All England Club and embraces that status. Every bit of it.So on Saturday, after reaching the fourth round at the All England Club with a 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3, 7-5 victory over No. 25 Nicolas Jarry at Centre Court, when he was asked whether it comes as something of a shock to him to already be one of the faces of the Grand Slam tournament, and already one of its favorites, at the ripe old age of 20, Alcaraz shrugged.“Well, I’m not surprised, honestly, ’cause I know my skills. I know what I’m capable of,” Alcaraz said, wearing the white bucket hat that’s become his signature news...3 Tigers pitchers combine for no-hitter against Blue Jays
