MANILA, Philippines — A Chinese coast guard ship and an accompanying vessel rammed a Philippine coast guard ship and a military-run supply boat Sunday off a contested shoal, Philippine officials said, in an encounter that heightened fears of an armed conflict in the disputed South China Sea.A top Philippine security official told The Associated Press there were no injuries among the Filipino crew members and an assessment of the damage to both vessels was underway.The official said that the two incidents near Second Thomas Shoal, where China has repeatedly tried to isolate a Philippine marine outpost, could have been worse if the vessels were not able to maneuver rapidly away from the Chinese ships. SAN DIEGO -- A 21-year-old man was stabbed on the trolley Saturday evening while he was sleeping, according to San Diego police.Around 5:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to the the Nobel Trolley Station in La Jolla after receiving a call reporting the stabbing.The victim was found with a wound to his chest and was transported to a nearby hospital. SAN DIEGO -- A man was arrested Sunday afternoon after barricading himself in a Carlsbad motel room for several hours with a samurai-style sword and firearm, police said.Around 9:41 a.m., officers with the Carlsbad Police Department were dispatched to the Carlsbad Village Inn in response to a report of a person brandishing a sword at paramedics, who were responding to an unrelated medical aid call.Responding officers approached the room where the subject, later identified by authorities as 33-year-old Lomita resident Eliot Rauk, was staying to make contact. SAN DIEGO -- For the second time in two years, a reclusive, ghoulish species of deep-sea fish washed ashore on an Orange County beach earlier this month.Just in time for Friday the 13th, seasonal lifeguard at Crystal Cove State Park Sierra Fockler discovered a deep-sea anglerfish laying on the shore of Moro Beach near the lifeguard headquarters. The park later shared the pictures of the incredible find on social media.Lifeguards estimate that the intact, but deceased specimen washed up with the morning's high tide, which was around 9 a.m. California Department of Fish and Wildlife personnel picked it up shortly after for further research. Police have deemed a suspicious package not dangerous that was left near a bus platform at Bayview subway station on Sunday night.At approximately 7:20 p.m. Toronto police arrived to investigate. (KTXL) -- A former Major League Baseball player was among two people arrested in Nevada this week in connection to a 2021 shooting that killed a man and injured his wife in North Lake Tahoe, California, according to the Placer County Sheriff's Office. Danny Serafini, 49, who played for Colorado Rockies and five other teams, was arrested in Winnemucca Friday morning for the murder of Robert Gary Spohr, 70, and the attempted murder of the man's wife, Wendy Wood, 68. ST. CLOUD, Minn. — One man was killed and two others were injured in a shooting early Sunday morning, according to St. Cloud police.Police said the suspect or suspects are believed to have left the scene, and investigators are looking for any information from the public, according to a news release.The incident occurred in the 700 block of Sixth Avenue South at about 3:55 a.m. Sunday. Two women were killed Saturday afternoon when the SUV they were in ran into a tire that had fallen off a semitrailer truck on Interstate 94 near St. Michael.According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Viengkhone Nguyen, 44, of Brooklyn Park, was the driver and Lea Khamphachanh, 43, of St. Cloud, was her passenger.The women were in a 2023 Nissan Rogue heading east on I-94 near Minnesota 241 when a westbound semi on I-94 lost two tires.The Nissan, driven by Nguyen, collided with one of the tires, killing the two women.
