What bats could the Red Sox add this holiday season?

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 03:07:01 GMT

Much has been said about how the Red Sox need pitching, but new chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has also gone on record as saying the club needs another bat, too.Specifically, the Red Sox could use another right-handed hitter to help balance out the lineup. The club could also use an upgrade at second base or a designated hitter who offers some degree of positional versatility. The market for position players isn’t nearly as deep as the pitching market, but there are still a number of interesting options available through trades and free agency. For the purposes of this exercise, we’re going to ignore financial considerations or what it might take to land someone in a trade and instead focus more on fit and what each player could potentially bring to the table.Shohei Ohtani, DHOn one hand Ohtani really doesn’t make a lot of sense for the Red Sox at all. He’s a left-handed bat who will exclusively DH next season, so positionally adding him would be like ja...

Unlucky Louie’s wife, Esther, had slightly rear-ended a car in front of her.“The damage was so light we didn’t even have our car repaired,” Louie told me disgustedly. “But the other driver went to one of those personal liability attorneys, alleging that he had been injured. Our insurance company settled rather than fight in court.”Insurance can be useful at bridge. A safety play is like an insurance policy: You pay a premium — you give up on taking the maximum number of tricks — but you are protected against a disastrous loss.LAST TRUMPAt today’s slam, declarer takes the king of diamonds and draws trumps. Missiles and Drones Among Weapons Stolen From U.S. in Iraq and Syria

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 03:07:01 GMT

U.S. military outposts in Iraq and Syria are plagued by thefts of weapons and equipment, according to exclusive documents obtained by The Intercept that show militias and criminal gangs are systematically targeting U.S. forces.Military investigations launched earlier this year found that “multiple sensitive weapons and equipment” — including guided missile launch systems as well as drones — have been stolen in Iraq. This follows hundreds of thousands of dollars in military gear that were purloined from U.S. troops in Iraq and Syria between 2020 and 2022, as reported earlier this year by The Intercept.America’s bases in Iraq and Syria ostensibly exist to conduct “counter-ISIS missions,” but experts say they are used primarily as a check against Iran. Since the October outbreak of the conflict between Israel and Hamas, these bases have come under regular rocket and drone attacks as part of an undeclared war between the U.S. and Iran and its surrogate militias. The U.S. has increasingly...
