Bill increasing power to TCOLE passes AUSTIN (KXAN) – The legislature has passed a bill to give the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement more authority to set law enforcement standards and more control over the creation of new departments. The measure now heads to the governor’s desk to be signed into law.The TCOLE reforms in Senate Bill 1445 by Sen. Angela Paxton, R-McKinney, were years in the making. Paxton is a member of the Sunset Advisory Commission, and her bill was created from recommendations made by that agency after years of review. Years-long struggle to reform TCOLE may end this legislative session In a January 2023 report, the Sunset Commission described TCOLE as “toothless” and said it “had relatively limited authority to set or enforce anything but minimum licensure standards and had no meaningful role in setting or enforcing standards of conduct for law enforcement personnel or holding them accountable.”Under the new law, TCOLE would develop new minimum standards — with the help of an advisory...

Anatomy of an excellent road trip: How SF Giants returned home with winning record MILWAUKEE — The midwest weather was beautiful this week. But when it rained, it seemed to pour. The Giants failed to complete a four-game sweep of the Brewers, losing 7-5, after falling in too deep of an early hole for the second time this trip. All of their other five contests however ended in wins, and the Giants (27-26) boarded their charter flight back home Sunday afternoon with a pair of series victories and a winning record in their back pocket. All in all, the loss Sunday was only their third in their past 13 games, and their 5-2 record in the seven-game swing against the two Central division leaders amounted to their best mark on a road trip this season. With three games to play this month, the Giants are 16-10 in May, and despite Sunday’s result, appear to have turned a corner.1) It’s all in the pitchingAlex Cobb was tagged for seven runs — all in the first two innings — and snapped a couple streaks in the process. It was the first time all season that Cobb, the Gi...

Queen’s music catalog could sell for over $1 billion, source says (CNN) — The songs of Queen are known the world over, and the band’s body of work might soon sell for a staggering sum.A source familiar with the music acquisition tells CNN that discussions are “well underway” for Universal Music Group to acquire Queen’s catalog from Disney Music Group. The source added that the sale could surpass $1 billion and that the deal is “expected to close within one month.”CNN has reached out to Universal Music Group and Disney Music Group for comment, as well as a representative for the band.Bruce Springsteen previously made headlines in December 2021 with the sale of his song catalog, with the total in the vicinity of $500 million. That sum remains arguably the highest amount a music catalog has sold for, but if the Queen sale goes through, a new record will be set.The billion-dollar total for Queen’s music is surely that high thanks in part to the 2018 Oscar-winning film “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which told the story of the band’s inception with a focus on late...

Leicester’s fairy tale is over as Everton stays in Premier League after final-day escape LEICESTER, England (AP) — Seven years after the most improbable Premier League title triumph of all, Leicester was relegated from English soccer’s top division on Sunday while Everton pulled off another last-day escape to extend its 69-year stay.Leeds was also consigned to the drop with Leicester and already-relegated Southampton as the league season reached its conclusion. Everton’s 1-0 win over Bournemouth meant Leicester’s 2-1 victory against West Ham was ultimately meaningless. Leeds’ miserable campaign ended in a 4-1 loss at home against Tottenham. Leicester’s demise stands out because of the dramatic nature of its fall after experiencing the most spectacular period in its history in recent years. By winning the title as a 5,000-1 shot in 2016, it provided the Premier League with its greatest fairy tale – being crowned champion in only its second season after being promoted from the second tierJust two years ago it was celebrating victory aga...

Rizzo delivers go-ahead hit, injures neck as Yanks chase Darvish early in 10-7 win over Padres NEW YORK (AP) — Anthony Rizzo hit a go-ahead RBI single in New York’s seven-run third inning before injuring his neck on a pickoff play as the Yankees knocked out Yu Darvish early and beat the San Diego Padres 10-7 on Sunday.Rizzo was injured when Kyle Higashioka picked off Fernando Tatis Jr. to end the sixth. As the first baseman leaned back to apply the tag, Rizzo collided with Tatis. Rizzo stayed on the ground for a few minutes and headed back to the clubhouse as the Yankees batted. The Yankees said Rizzo’s exit was for precautionary reasons. Jake Cronenworth hit a solo homer two batters in and Rougned Odor hit a two-run homer off Gerrit Cole (6-0), who allowed six runs (five earned) and four hits in six-plus innings.Aaron Judge homered off Darvish in the first and hit a tying RBI single ahead of Rizzo’s hit. Willie Calhoun, who was traded from the Dodgers to Texas for Darvish in 2017, hit an RBI double to knock out the right-hander.Harrison Bader and Higashioka committed th...
