Published Wed, 05 Mar 2025 01:17:24 GMT

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. regulators are requiring immediate inspections and possible repairs to Pratt & Whitney engines on some Airbus passenger jets because of a manufacturing problem that could cause parts to wear out sooner than expected. The Federal Aviation Administration said Friday it will require ultrasonic inspections of 20 engines on U.S.-registered planes within 30 days. The same flaw affects 202 engines worldwide, the agency said. The FAA rule replaces a directive from October, which told aircraft operators to have the engines checked at their next shop visit, and followed a disclosure last month by Pratt that about 200 engines around the world would need quick inspections and potential replacement of engine disks. The affected engines are among 1,200 that Pratt estimates will need to be removed from planes and inspected within nine to 12 months because powder metal used in the manufacturing process was contaminated. The FAA said it acted after further analysis of an engi...

(CNN) — Former President Donald Trump is planning to skip the first Republican presidential debate on Wednesday and is instead expected to sit for an interview with former Fox News Host Tucker Carlson, multiple sources familiar with his plans tell CNN.Over the last 24 hours, Trump has increasingly been informing those close to him that he has made his decision, and will not be on the debate stage next week. The timing for the Carlson interview has yet to be determined, the sources said, but it is expected to air around the same time as the debate. The New York Times first reported the details of the Carlson interview.CNN previously reported that Trump was not expected to participate in the debate and that his campaign had engaged in conversations with Carlson about a potential interview as counterprogramming for the event.Trump’s advisers continue to add the caveat, however, that the former president could ultimately change his mind and decide at the 11th hou...

Dan Rodricks: A cosmic night of Orioles baseball, a sideshow at Camden Yards and six more very random items | STAFF COMMENTARY

Published Wed, 05 Mar 2025 01:17:24 GMT

Cosmic baseball: We are approaching the 40th anniversary of a legendary Orioles game at Memorial Stadium: The night relief pitcher Tippy Martinez picked off three runners at first base in the same inning. Longtime Baltimoreans know well the story and have told it to their offspring: On Aug. 24, 1983, in a game against Toronto that went to extra innings, manager Joe Altobelli had to call on utility infielder Lenn Sakata to catch. Sakata had not crouched behind home plate with mask and mitt since Little League. So, Toronto runners figured they could take big leads off first base and easily steal second. That didn’t happen as, one by one, Martinez snapped throws to first baseman Eddie Murray that resulted in all three outs. To top it off, the home team prevailed in extra innings, 7-4, with Sakata, the unlikeliest of heroes, hitting a three-run, game-winning homer. It was cosmic, a grand night on 33rd Street, and by now 1.6 million Baltimore baseball fans have claimed they were th...
