Local water district floats plan to turn ocean water into drinking water

A local water district is proposing an ambitious plan to turn ocean water into drinking water, and while the idea of a “Blue Water Farm” sounds promising, some environmental groups say that ocean desalination should be a last resort and that more can be done to conserve water in affluent communities. Over the last two years, customers of the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District (LVMWD) have seen restrictions and fines over how much water they use. “The reason for that is because we have one singular source of water, which is the [California] State Water Project,” LVMWD Communications Manager Mike McNutt told KTLA. McNutt added that the water district is exploring new ways to keep lawns lush and green in big-money neighborhoods like Calabasas, Westlake Village and Hidden Hills. “What we promised our customers is to look into desalination as a viable option for us to bring in more water to the district,” he said. Officials are hoping that they can bring ...SF Giants running out of time to solve road woes, salvage playoff hopes

PHOENIX — There’s an old adage that is often applied across sports. Win half your road games, take care of business at home, and you’ve got yourself a playoff team. The San Francisco Giants have fulfilled half that equation. They are 43-32 at Oracle Park but just 33-42 away from the shores of McCovey Cove, and after dropping three of four at Coors Field over the weekend, have won only five of their previous 28 road games, a .152 winning percentage. Dating back to almost the All-Star break, no team has been worse away from home, a stretch of futility made only more perplexing given their 17-10 record at home during the same time.“I saw that stat,” outfielder Austin Slater said, “and honestly, I started laughing a little bit. I thought it was encouraging how close we were and how bad we’ve been on the road. … I believe in the law of averages. If we’ve been that bad recently, it’s bound to swing back our way at some point. Because that’s not the kind o...The 10 most expensive reported home sales in Oakland the week of Sep. 11

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- This week the California Academy of Sciences revealed the age of a beloved Australian lungfish who is the oldest living aquarium fish in the world. The fish, named Methuselah, has lived at Steinhart Aquarium in San Francisco since 1938. Methuselah arrived in San Francisco on a ship with hundreds of other fishes from Fiji and Australia. She out-lived them all. DNA analysis, and a new study led by Dr. Ben Mayne of CSIRO and Dr. David Roberts, estimated Methuselah’s age is between 92-101 years old. Dr. Roberts said, "Her actual age could conceivably be over 100, placing her in the rare club of fish centenarians."(Photo by Gayle Laird, California Academy of Sciences)Methuselah is famous at the aquarium for her longevity, charming personality, and penchant for belly rubs, according to CAS. The fish's previous estimated age was 84. But Methuselah is even more ancient that scientists previously believed.Methuselah's species, Neoceratodus forsteri, is endangered.
