Warriors, Thompson not near contract extension ahead of season opener: report

The Warriors and Klay Thompson are reportedly not close to an agreement on a contract extension as the former All-NBA guard prepares to open his 13th season with Golden State on Tuesday night.Thompson’s camp and the front office are at a “dead point” in negotiations, according to a Monday report from The Athletic, with issues both on the length of the deal and the money involved. There is no deadline for Thompson, 33, and the Warriors to agree to a deal, but with the season opener as a deadline for extensions to many rookie contracts, it’s a time when other agreements come together, too.The Warriors are reportedly aiming to stay under the second level of the luxury tax (expected to be around $190 million), which may be difficult with almost $115 million already committed to the other members of the Warriors’ starting five.Thompson signed a five-year, $190 million contract in 2019 just after tearing his ACL in the NBA Finals. It wasn’t a downpour. But it wasn’t just a light sprinkle. And a few areas in the mountains actually got a decent amount. The rain that fell Sunday across the Bay Area ranked as the highest precipitation total for any day in nearly six months. That’s not unusual. Very little rain falls most years in summer in California. Nevertheless, the soggy Sunday was a reminder that autumn is here and the state’s winter rainy season has begun.San Francisco received .19 inches Sunday — not a lot by winter storm standards. But the last time more fell in a single day was on May 5, when the city received .54 inches.Oakland similarly saw .19 inches, the most since May 6, when .22 inches fell. The storm came ashore mostly in the Sonoma area, so rain totals were lower farther south. San Jose received .07 inches Sunday, slightly less than the .08 that fell Sept. 30. The last time significantly more fell in the Bay Area’s most populous city was May 5, when .15 inches arr...Who is pilot Joseph Emerson? Pleasant Hill neighbors say he's 'very friendly'

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Pentagon has sent military advisers, including a Marine Corps general versed in urban warfare, to Israel to aid in its war planning and is speeding multiple sophisticated air defense systems to the Middle East days ahead of an anticipated ground assault into Gaza. One of the officers leading the assistance is Marine Corps Lt. Gen. James Glynn, who previously helped lead special operations forces against the Islamic State and served in Fallujah, Iraq, during some of the most heated urban combat there, according to a U.S. official who was not authorized to discuss Glynn’s role and spoke on the condition of anonymity. Glynn will also be advising on how to mitigate civilian casualties in urban warfare, the official said. Israel is preparing a large-scale ground operation in an environment in which Hamas militants have had years to prepare tunnel networks and set traps throughout northern Gaza’s dense urban blocks. James Madison is back in the Top 25 after a 7-0 start to the season, and coach Curt Cignetti is confident the Dukes are better prepared for continued success this time.A year ago, after starting 5-0 and being ranked No. 25 for the first time as a Bowl Subdivision program, they promptly lost three straight.“I think last season we were ranked and then went down to Georgia Southern, there was a lot of hoopla around here,” Cignetti said Monday, the day after the Dukes appeared in both the AP Top 25 and the coach’s poll for the first time.“We crossed that bridge a little bit when we played them last time because we were 5-0 again, the same match up, and I thought we handled it much better.”On Oct. 14, this time at JMU’s Bridgeforth Stadium, the Dukes rolled, 41-13.“This team has learned the lessons from the past,” Cignetti said. “It’s very mature. One thing I’ll say about this team is they have been extremely focused day in, day out and played with great effort and energy eve...Nobody stepped up to make a difference while the star-deficient Rams blew a lead, lost to Steelers

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Rams’ most disappointing loss of the season came with some painful reminders of this team’s self-inflicted shortcomings.Los Angeles (3-4) was beaten in crunch time again Sunday, getting outscored 21-8 in the second half of a 24-17 loss to Pittsburgh. The Rams had a strong second quarter and built a lead heading to the fourth, but the Steelers outplayed Matthew Stafford, Aaron Donald and their supporting cast when it counted.“We didn’t help ourselves,” coach Sean McVay said. “There were a lot of plays that we could have been able to make. There’s always things. Any time that we don’t get it done, it’s a collective effort as a team, but there were a lot of things that we didn’t do to be able to finish this game.”It’s increasingly clear the Rams don’t have the talent to do many of those things. When the Rams gutted their roster in the offseason, they removed several difference-making veterans and elected to play this year with y...Latest news
