KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Malaysia’s government said Thursday that all Swatch products that contain lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer elements — including watches, wrappers and boxes — were banned, warning that anyone found with one could be jailed for up to three years. The ban has been published in the Federal Gazette — which makes it official — as part of a printing law that includes distribution and possession, citing concerns that such products were detrimental to the nation’s morality.Malaysia, which is predominantly Muslim, already criminalizes same-sex relationships, with punishments ranging from caning under Islamic laws to 20 years in prison for sodomy under colonial-era civil laws.In May, authorities raided Swatch stores and confiscated more than 160 watches from its Pride Collection. Lowertown’s latest addition Erta Ale serves tasty Ethiopian fare

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 08:13:01 GMT

I have to admit, I was sad to lose Kyatchi, the Japanese restaurant that opened a second location in Lowertown St. Paul in 2017, only to close after the pandemic.Saying goodbye seems to be a common occurrence over the past few months as many restaurants deal with rising labor, real estate and food costs, but I’m happy to say hello to Erta Ale, the Ethiopian restaurant that took Kyatchi’s place. The vegetarian platter at Erta Ale, the new Ethiopian restaurant in Lowertown St. Paul. (Jess Fleming / Pioneer Press)The space has been changed slightly — the open kitchen/sushi assembly area has been drywalled in, which surprisingly makes the restaurant seem less crowded, and tables have been reconfigured slightly. There is new artwork, but also a few giant televisions, which were used to play (not too loud) music while were there. Much like Kyatchi, Erta Ale’s atmosphere is warm and inviting. The restaurant just got its beer and wine license, and they are serving several local beers on...

Ask Amy: “Gunkle” and niece are out of tune

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 08:13:01 GMT

Dear Amy: I have twin nieces, both 29. We’ve always been close.Their dad (my brother) is an alcoholic known to draw unwanted attention to himself. You can imagine being teenagers and dealing with this challenge and embarrassment.I am the “Gunkle” (gay uncle) who has always been their biggest cheerleader, helped financially for their education, the person they often came to for advice, etc. We’re super close, although we have always lived in different cities and now only see each other a couple times a year.Last weekend one of my nieces (who has mentioned that I am one of the most important people in their life) attended a concert in another state. Her husband and I have our own (poor) opinions of one another. I have actively tried to repair the relationship but have not had any response from him.Anyway, to get to this concert, they literally had to drive within a mile from my home — both coming and going. She did not visit or let me know they would be nearby. The only reason I k...

“My cousin the Queen of Diamonds is a few feathers shy of a whole duck,” the Queen of Hearts told Alice at the Mad Hatter’s game. “She thinks losing a trick can be better than winning one, but I know better.”“Don’t listen to her,” the Queen of Diamonds scowled.Alice became declarer at today’s four spades. Since the bidding suggested that dummy might have a club suit declarer could use, West, the Hatter, looked for tricks by leading an aggressive deuce of diamonds. East played the jack.HEART SWITCHAlice had her fingers on the queen when she realized that if the trump finesse lost, West would surely switch to hearts. So Alice won with the ace(!), led a club to dummy and let the ten of trumps ride. The Hatter took the king and, sure enough, led a second low diamond. He hoped East would win and shift to hearts. He was stunned when Alice produced the queen and claimed an overtrick.“Off with his head,” the Queen of Hearts ro...
