Critical Raw Materials: Ensuring secure and sustainable supply chains for EU's green and digital future

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 00:10:05 GMT

On 20 March, the Commission proposed a comprehensive set of actions to ensure the EU's access to a secure, diversified, affordable and sustainable supply of critical raw materials. Critical raw materials are indispensable for a wide set of strategic sectors including the net zero industry, the digital industry, aerospace, and defence sectors. While demand for critical raw materials is projected to increase drastically, Europe heavily relies on imports, often from quasi-monopolistic third country suppliers. The EU needs to mitigate the risks for supply chains related to such strategic dependencies to enhance its economic resilience, as highlighted by shortages in the aftermath of the Covid-19 and the energy crisis following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. This can put at risk the EU's efforts to meet its climate and digital objectives. The Regulation and Communication on critical raw materials adopted today leverage the strengths and opportunities of the Single Market and the EU's extern...

McManus: Silicon Valley Bank’s collapse may be a blessing in disguise

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 00:10:05 GMT

In the brief but spectacular collapse of Silicon Valley Bank, we may just have witnessed the best banking crisis ever.It might even have been useful.Nobody got seriously hurt, except bank executives who made bad decisions and shareholders who weren’t paying attention. Those Silicon Valley libertarians who spent years demanding that government get out of the way earned their comeuppance when they begged the Federal Reserve to save them. “Where is (Federal Reserve Chair Jerome H.) Powell? Where is (Treasury Secretary Janet L.) Yellen? Stop this crisis NOW,” tweeted David Sacks, the tech investor who was a fan of creative destruction until it got too near his bank account.Just as there are no atheists in foxholes, there are no libertarians in financial panics.Republican politicians provided a dose of comedy, blaming SVB’s financial blunders on the imaginary menace of “woke banking.” There’s no evidence that the bankers’ political leanings,...

Frank Piro, a Vacaville police watch commander, said Monday afternoon.Frances is no longer in Solano County Jail custody and a search of court records did not show when and where he would be arraigned in Solano County Superior Court.A social media post on the CHP’s Golden Gate Division Air Operations page indicated that CHP H-32 was aiding the Vacaville Police Department with a search, when, while orbiting, the helicopter was struck several times with a green laser. The copter crew was able to locate the source of the laser and directed officers to the location, which was not indicated in the post.Related ArticlesCrime and Public Safety | Hayward man shot in Union City Crime and Public Safety | ...

Opinion: What happened in Pajaro isn’t just a ‘natural’ disaster

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 00:10:05 GMT

In the last few years, California has experienced extreme wildfires, heat waves and the ever-present COVID-19 pandemic. What has become abundantly clear, particularly from the ravages of the pandemic on low-income communities of color, is that disaster risk is not an equal-opportunity affair. The latest evidence of this came this month as the Pajaro River levee failed and flooded a small town populated mainly by migrant workers and their families. In an eerie coincidence, the levee failure occurred on March 12, 95 years to the day the St. Francis Dam catastrophically failed because of a defective foundation and other design flaws. The dam collapse triggered a massive flood in Los Angeles and Ventura counties that claimed the lives of nearly 500 people, many of them undocumented migrant farmworkers. It represents the second-greatest loss of life in California’s history, after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire, and is still considered one of the worst civil engineering disaster...
